The Locavore’s Dilemma: Five Myths of the ‘Buy Local’ Trend
Professor Pierre Desrochers will join us in the Maritimes in March to speak about the ‘buy local’ trend in the politics of food and agriculture. His criticisms of ‘locavorism’ – the movement to connect food producers and consumers in the same geographical area – are found in his 2012 book The Locavore’s Dilemma: In Praise of the 10,000-Mile Diet, co-authored by Hiroko Shimizu.
Dr. Desrochers is Associate Professor of Geography at the University of Toronto Mississauga. He earned his PhD in 2000 from the University of Montreal. Working in English and French, his academic output has covered entrepreneurship and local economic development, environmental policy, housing, international trade, technological innovation and urban governance. He is also an instructor at the “Rothbard University” conference, supported by the Atlantic Institute for Market Studies.
